Learning Objectives

• The student will understand the history of and newest developments at the National Crime Information Center (NCIC).
• The student will understand uniform crime reporting (UCR) and the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS).
• The student will understand the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS).
• The student will explore other potential sources of government information available to state and local police officers, such as the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) and individual state motor vehicle departments.
• The student will understand the difference between a government database and a commercial database.
• The student will review several regional information sharing schemes such as the Bureau of Justice Assistance Regional Information Sharing Systems (RISS) program.
